Baconfile logo

Sometimes you want to share a file – it could be a picture, a video, whatever.  You want to be able to upload the file somewhere and publish a link to it, for example on Twitter.  Enter Baconfile!

Baconfile is a web service created by Leah Culver (co-founder and the lead developer of now-defunct Pownce).  You create a login, upload a file of your choice and then share the (short) URL.  Basically it’s like TwitPic, only not limited to images.

Baconfile uses Amazon S3 for storage so it’s high availability and low cost, although it does mean that you’ll need to create an S3 account order to use it.  Apparently they’re considering free/paid accounts directly through Baconfile which will eliminate this requirement once it’s a bit more mature.

Today isn’t April Fool’s, so I guess this must be legit – according to the company blog, Pownce is shutting down, and their employees and technology are moving to a company called Six Apart.  I’d never even heard of Six Apart before, but their blog also confirms it.

I wonder whether this is a good thing or a sign of the recession.

To be honest, although I’ve been a member of Pownce for a long time I didn’t really post a lot there.  It never really grabbed me as a file sharing tool because of the small maximum file size, and I have my own blog to blog with.  Their site was also always trying to sell me premium membership without offering anything that was worth the money.

My Face Your Manga picture

All of a sudden there seems to be a wave of people making pictures of themselves using Face Your Manga (now including me).  Basically it’s the same as WeeMee and some other websites out there – you make a picture of yourself out of bits of face/body/clothes etc.  My one looks a bit grumpy, but not inaccurate.

It’s a fun bit of vanity but fairly limited – what makes the current wave more interesting is that Leah Siddall has made a site called Pownce Yearbook that shows the Face Your Manga pictures of people on Pownce.  It’s really interesting not only how people look but how they see themselves.
