The Prodigy - Invaders Must Die

Last month The Prodigy released their fifth album – Invaders Must Die.

I’ve been a fan of The Prodigy for a long time – not since the beginning, but a long time.

I really enjoyed their previous album Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned.  It was different from their previous albums in that only Liam Howlett was involved from the original group - only guest vocalist were used.

In Invaders Must Die, Keith Flint and Maxim Reality are back doing the vocals on most of the tracks, and it’s at least as good as Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned was.

Invaders Must Die is identifiably Prodigy, which means it sounds a bit 90′s.  I can see why some people wouldn’t like that, but it has progressed and grown since then and it’s exactly my style.

Spinnerette - Ghetto Love EP cover art

Spinnerette have released the Ghetto Love EP for digital download (yay!).  It costs $5 and features four tracks that will be on the yet-to-be-released album Valium Knights:

1. Bury My Heart
2. Distorting A Code
3. Valium Knights
4. Ghetto Love

My favourites are Valium Knights and Ghetto Love, though the other two tracks are good too.

EDIT: I’ve already started getting hits for people searching for download links for Valium Knights and Ghetto Love.  Just buy it you cheap pirates – it doesn’t cost that much and if you’re really a fan then you’ll want to support the band, right?  The announcement email even contained a plea from the band:

I recognized the song Reckoner from Radiohead’s album In Rainbows in tonight’s episode of Life (Evil… and His Brother Ziggy).

I didn’t notice it in the first series of Life, but the music in this series is absolutely fantastic.

Fortunately it turns out that the Distillers’ lead singer Brody Dalle has started a new band with similar sounding music – Spinnerette.

The title song from their upcoming album Valium Knights is available as an mp3 download if you sign up for the newsletter on their website.

If the rest of the album is as good as this song I just might have another favorite album – can’t wait.

Battlefield: Bad Company soundtrack

The Battlefield: Bad Company soundtrack is available – I love the menu music (the jazzy piano one) but it’s not on the soundtrack!?

Burn Notice soundtrack

The Burn Notice soundtrack is now available. Interestingly it seems to only be available for mp3 download, not as a CD – wave of the future I guess.

Regular readers (if there are any) will know that I’m a massive fan of Burn Notice, but although the songs go well in the context of the show I don’t think I would listen to them on their own.

Jack Conte did a mashup of Aphex Twin and Bright Eyes – I really like it.  It makes me laugh every time he headbutts the cymbals

Portishead Third cover

I have been a fan of Portishead for years – a decade, even.

I know it’s almost a cliché, but Sour Times is intrinsically tied to some of my treasured teen memories. Roads is so perfect and beautiful it almost brings tears to my eyes whenever I listen to it. Both the Portishead and Dummy albums are among the few where I like every song.

Which brings us to Third. I couldn’t be anticipating it more if I tried.

Having said that, why is it called Third ? Is the fact that it’s their third album really the most important thing about it? Can’t say I like the name.

So far the only song I’ve heard from the album is Machine Gun, and I’m sorry to say I’m disappointed. I want to like it, I went into it wanting to like it, and I just can’t. Beth Gibbons is spectacular as always but what the hell is that “machine gun” noise? It’s so unmelodious that it’s not even music anymore. Try as I might, I can’t bring myself to like it.

I can only hope that the rest of the album is better. And I do hope. I do.

The station isn’t perfect yet, it still suggests things that I totally hate, so if you try it and the music sucks then it may not be me
