As promised, the beta of Google Chrome was released today.  With great anticipation I downloaded and installed it.

The installer went away for a while, using 100% (of one) CPU, but I think that was because of the sheer size of my browsing history being imported from Firefox.  Need a progress bar there, I think.

When it finally installed, I started it up and...

The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005). Click OK to terminate the application.

I get that message every time I try to load any page.

That makes me a saaaad panda :(

EDIT: The problem seems to be caused by Symantec Endpoint Security (specifically the Application & Device Control component).  Hopefully Symantec will release an update that fixes this soon.  In the meantime you can uninstall Application & Device Control without completely uninstalling Symantec Endpoint Security.

EDIT: The problem has been added to the Chrome bug tracker, so you can track its progress here

EDIT: The problem has been added to the Symantec Knowledge Base here

    Try this:
Edit the Google Chrome shortcut. In target, put --no-sandbox at the end.
    It will be like this:
    "C:\Documents and Settings\username\....\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" --no-sandbox

    Try --no-sandbox option...

I too have Endpoint Security installed and I have the same error on 2 boxes running XP Pro.

I too do not want to uninstall ES, because nasty things happen when I do that ;)

I too had the problem with SEP. I came across this:
    http://groups.google.com/group/google-chrome-he...

After following the advice and rebooting, the error disappeared.
  • Brent Cox
I use SEP too and, yes, I get the same error.
  • Zeek
    same error.
    I do have Symantec Endpoint.
    Uninstalling it now.
Will post if fix the issue
  • Norbi
I also use Symantec Endpoint Protection. I can confirm that uninstalling Symantec Endpoint Protection solves the problem. I am waiting for update then because IMHO Symantec Endpoint is one of the best antivirus software I used.

From the other hand I believe it is rather SEP problem not google. My customer has had today issue with new computer SEP and AutoCAD 12. The problem was identical, just different address.

Yup, same issue for me. That's one strike against Chrome. Didn't have any issues like this with IE, Firefox, or Opera when I've installed any of them.
  • well to be fair we did all download and install it within seconds of it being released :)

I'm sure IE and Firefox had their share of teething troubles in the early days

I have the same exact problem. In fact all my coworker had the same problem when installing chrome on our pc. One of the tried to install chrome in his laptop and was successful.

I'm running XP Pro SP2, and it installed and is working pretty well. Still, I went to Facebook and ran into a big problem: Facebook doesn't work very well. For instance, the pages load just find, but let's say I click on a button or something that usually launches one of those mini windows (Like if you want to add a new friend, so you click on their name and it pops up that mini box for you to enter the personal message, etc.). Well, that doesn't work at all. Also, lots of other buttons don't work, like if I go to my friends, and then click "everyone" to see everyone, instead of just friends with status updates, it does nothing...

Are you running Symantec Endpoint? That seems to be what is causing this error for a lot of people right now....
  • Cain
Yeah, I suspect it has something to do with my Symantec endpoint protection.
But I don't wanna uninstall my anti-virus software just to try out some fancy tools that's not crucial to me...
  • Yes I am... though disabling it didn't help, and I'm not sure I want to uninstall it to find out whether that's the problem...

same error here on win xp... tried uninstall and install.. no luck. anyone out there able to fix this?

I get the Same thing on 3 different PC with Windows XP SP2 :(
  • big ted
me too. i hate google now.
  • Same issue here. I have submitted a ticket to Google in hopes they will offer a fix soon. I will let you know if I find anything out. Mind emailing me if you hear anything before I do?
  • They'll probably just release another version in a day or two that fixes the problem
  • Cameron
Yep, same crash here, Windows Vista SP1 32bit

Too bad, I really wanted to try it.
  • Peter
    Same here

Working again...now its not...wait...half a page, now an error.

    No wonder it's so fast!

I have same problem on Win 2K3 and XP SP3. Running Symantec AntiVirus, windows firewall, and the microsoft virus, outlook, on both machines.

Yeah, I'm having the same problem here. That's quite ironic:)
  • Hacker
I got the same thing running 32 bit SEP (MR2). I uninstalled SEP, rebooted, and Chrome started working (without an fresh install). I then installed SEP and Chrome worked until SEP pulled down updates. Now, on another PC running 64 bit Home Vista, and 64 bit SEP (MR2), Chrome worked upon install and continues to work. So it must be a 32 bit SEP issue.
  • Interesting - if an SEP update broke it, maybe Symantec can also fix it with an update
  • Bryce
I can't even download the installer from the website.

I managed once, then it came back with "invalid win32 application" error.

    Lame.
  • Brent Cox
And I'm required to have SEP for my work. Argh.
  • should be interesting to see if Chrome works more efficiently than FireFox and IE... if it's faster than Firefox, since isn't IE, then i'll use it
